This is the last loose week of summer around here. My kids head back to school in Georgia next week, and with a junior and a senior in the house, the whole production has come down to the right shoes, the right backpack, and a running negotiation over who is driving.

Every year around this time, once they pull out of the driveway and the house goes quiet by half past seven in the morning, something shifts for me and I start itching to make something again. What I want is never a finished project or anything for the shop or the feed, just something with my hands purely for the feeling of it.

If that sounds familiar, consider this your permission slip for the season ahead.

There is something about a fresh school year that makes us want to start things properly, with a new project and new supplies and a real plan, and that is usually the exact moment when making quietly turns into producing. Suddenly it has to become a finished quilt, or a postable photo, or a skill mastered on the very first try.

But some of the best creative time is the unproductive kind, like the scrap of fabric you stitched just to see what would happen, or the clay you shaped and then squished back into a ball. None of that is wasted time, and it is usually how your hands remember how to play again.

And if you would rather not do it alone, I have three whole days set aside for exactly this.
