Where Creative Passions Become Life-Changing Journeys

It's a Wednesday morning and I'm reading through replies to one of our emails. There are hundreds of them. One-word answers, mostly: quilting, watercolor, clay. I asked people what they make, and they told me. I'm scrolling through, smiling at all of them, when one stops me completely.

Her name is Linda.

She tells me she used to quilt: appliqué, piecework, counted cross stitch. She belonged to quilt guilds and an embroiderers guild. She has a four-harness floor loom made of beautiful cherry wood. She used to fuse glass in a small kiln and was just starting to sell things when she had to set it all down to care for her parents.

And then she says this:

I started HobbyScool because I believe creativity is something people need, the way they need sleep and sunlight, because it's what keeps people feeling like themselves.

Life doesn't take creativity away from people because they stopped caring about it. It takes it away in pieces, during seasons when something more urgent needed their whole heart. And then one day the floor loom is just being dusted, and the glass kiln hasn't been turned on in years.

Linda asked if I knew of others with the same problem getting back in. I told her: you are not unusual at all.

That's why I built HobbyScool to be a place with other people in it.

Linda still knows every stitch. What she lost was the habit of sitting down, and the feeling of making something alongside people who get it. The way you get that back is by showing up somewhere that already feels warm, where other people are making things too.
