Where Creative Passions Become Life-Changing Journeys
Does it feel like fall where you are yet?
Some of you are already wearing sweaters and some of you still have the air conditioning on, and either way October is less than two weeks away.
And fall decorations stay up a long time. You put them out now and they're still sitting there after Thanksgiving, which is about ten weeks, and that's longer than most of us leave the Christmas tree up.

Make the Halloween Thing You'll Still Want in November
So if you spend a whole Saturday on a Halloween project and then throw it out on November 1, that's a lot of work for one night.
The good news is you can fix that with three decisions, and you make all of them before you start cutting.
Three decisions to make before you start cutting
1. Pick a material that survives the attic. Felt, cotton, wool, wood and dried flowers will look the same next September as they do today, but crepe paper, craft foam, fresh gourds and anything hot-glued to foam will not. This is the biggest of the three.
2. Use fall colors for the main part. Rust, gold, cream, deep green and warm wood look right for all ten weeks. Black and bright green only look like Halloween, so save those for a piece you can take off later.
3. Make one piece that comes off. You could sew a felt basket and button a jack-o'-lantern face onto it, or make a table runner and set a different centerpiece on top. On November 1 you take off that one piece, and everything else keeps working through Thanksgiving.
All three come down to the same thing, which is deciding how long you want it to last before you start making it. A felt trick-or-treat basket is a Halloween project in October and a bread basket in November, and it works both times because it's felt.
