Where Creative Passions Become Life-Changing Journeys

You've probably made a gift once that ended up in a closet. It looked nice and it took you hours, but it just didn't fit that person's life, so they never really used it.

The handmade gifts people keep using are the ones that do a job for them. Something warm to grab on the way out the door, or something that makes a drawer smell nice, or a basket that's still holding the mail long after the cookies are gone.

So this year, before you pick what to make, ask four quick questions about each person on your list.

This Week's Creative Pick ยท October Edition

Four Questions Before You Pick a Project

Go through these one person at a time, and most of the time the answer shows up on its own:

  • What do they use every day? A scarf they wear all winter, or a basket sitting on their counter, tells you more than guessing does.
  • Where would it go? If you can picture the spot in their house, you're on the right track.
  • Will they take care of it? Some people never hand wash anything, so cotton holds up better for them than soft wool does.
  • How much time do you have? A small project you actually finish is worth more than a big one still sitting there in January.

Five gifts pass all four questions, and they're the ones that keep getting used. A thick crochet cowl, because it's a loop that goes over any coat and thick yarn works up fast. Little lavender bags, because the seams are short and straight and people tuck them in drawers and suitcases. A basket coiled out of cotton rope, where the basket is the wrapping and they keep using it after the treats are gone. Gift bags you dress up with last year's decorations, which people fold up and save. And an "open when" set, a few notes they open at different moments all year long.

Try this today: pick one person and answer the four questions about them. That's usually all it takes to know what to make.

Handmade Christmas gifts people will actually use: a knit cowl, a rope basket of treats, lavender sachets and tied bundles of notes

The Elves' Workshop Summit

๐Ÿ“… November 10โ€“12, 2026  |  ๐Ÿ•˜ 9:00 AM ET each day  |  ๐Ÿ’ป 100% Online  |  ๐ŸŽŸ Free to Attend

Sign ups just opened, and all five of those gifts are taught at it. Heidi Rodriguez shows you the thick crochet cowl, and Christine Burrows teaches the lavender bags without you needing to know how to sew. Crystal Martin coils the rope basket, Gina Tepper turns plain paper bags into the fancy kind, and Corinne Schmitt walks you through the "open when" notes.

That's five of the 32 free workshops, and here's how the three days are split up:

  • Day 1, Tuesday November 10: Handmade Gifts & Wrapping
  • Day 2, Wednesday November 11: Cards, Paper & Paint
  • Day 3, Thursday November 12: Ornaments & Holiday Decor

Each day opens at 9:00 AM ET and stays free to watch for 24 hours. It's worth signing up today instead of waiting, because the supply list comes with your confirmation email and that gives you almost four weeks to pick things up. Most of these use yarn, fabric and decorations you already have, so the list is shorter than you'd expect. It's free, you don't need a card, and you watch from home.

Until next Sunday, pick one person and answer those four questions. That's all you need to do this week.

Warmly,
Destini

P.S. Right after you register you'll see the VIP All-Access Pass for $37. It keeps all 32 workshops for life so you can watch them in December when your supplies are already out on the table, it takes the ads out, and it comes with 22 bonus downloads from the speakers, things like pattern bundles, printable greeting cards and a holiday budget planner.
